Report of Celebration of World Habitat Day 2006
in Phnom Penh City Cambodia
 
 

In the morning at 8 AM, October 10, 2006, World Habitat Day, celebrating and preparing by Phnom Penh Municipality next to the area of community village No.13. There was presided by He’s H.E. Kep Chuk Tekma, Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality, Mr. Douglas Gardner UN Resident Coordinator, and UNDP Resident Representative in Cambodia. Totally, there were 700 people in it: 200 participants from all directors of departments, chiefs of districts, and office chiefs and 500 people from the poor community The Agenda of celebration of WHD are as below:

    - Salutation of national Anthem
     - Brief remarks and presentation of Message of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan by Mr. Douglas Gardner, UN Resident coordinator and UNDP Representative
     - Presentation the Message of Executive Director of UN-Habitat Mrs. Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka by H.E. Mann Chhoeurn Vice Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality.
- Distribute licensing estate to 108 poor families in the community village No 13 in Sangkat Beng Kok 1, Khan Toul Kork.
     - Presentation with gratitude to the Government and the Municipality by a representative of the community.
     - Brief Remarks of H.E. Kep Chuk Tema Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality. `

 

 

To brief the speech of H.E. Kep Chuk Tema, H.E said that recently the migration of population from provinces into Phnom Penh City to find their jobs were higher rate than past several years. In addition, the message of Mr. Kofi Anna and of Mrs Anna reflect to a theme of WHD 2006 “City, Magnets Of Hope “, In fact, the urban population growth caused too many problems for Phnom Penh Municipality. Also, we have been trying to solve those step by step. We have had follow-ups the Government policy to improve 100 poor settlements a year under the leading of Prime Minister, Samdach Hun Sen, announcing in May, 2003. Particularly we have implemented our strategy of slum upgrading more than 200 poor communities, land sharing project, and relocation site upgrading from the year 2004-2006 etc. H.E Governor added that the Municipality has been working very hard to develop our city and to help our poor people. So we need in partnership from participation of people, NGOs also join together with the Municipality to develop our City. H. E. Governor requested to all poor people, receiving licensing estate that day should prepare their attitude to be good citizens now they become our real citizens from today to the future. The celebration was closing, at 10 AM at the same day, with traditional art acclaim of the meaning World Habitat Day “ Cities, Magnet of Hope 2006-2007 .
