Phnom Penh authorities in cooperation with European Community based in Phnom Penh, departments and Ministry of Environment launched a campaign on October 18 under the topic of « Join Together for Phnom Penh without Danger of Battery». The ceremony was presided over by H.E KEP CHUK TEMA, Governor of Phnom Penh along with representatives from embassies based in Phnom Penh, officials concerned, people and students. CHIEB SIVON, Director of Phnom Penh Environment said, « Batteries are main material for everybody and in line with currently advanced technology, we have batteries with us such as watch and hand phone. Some 600 tons of dead batteries are disposed every year. Battery wastes disposed on soil and water posed long-term danger to human lives, environment and natural resources.» Also on that occasion His Excellency the Governor said, « The unsafe battery waste disposal has sparked concern to people around the world due to the increase of population, advanced technology, industry, economy in cities and urban areas. We have to work together to prevent the hazards of deteriorating battery waste.» The Governor took an opportunity to distribute 330 battery waste bins to authorities concerned and gave leaflet to the participants to hand over to passengers and people.
