  • Get-Together with Residents in Poor Communities in Phnom Penh

The Municipality of Phnom Penh on October 09, 2007 held a get-together ceremony to mark the anticipation of the Pchom Ben Day with some 1.000 residents in poor communities in Phnom Penh. The ceremony was held under the presidency of H.E KEP CHUK TEMA, Governor of Phnom Penh.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor said, « By 2005, the population of Phnom Penh consist of 1.050.000 people, of which 25 percents living under the poverty line and they do not have proper land and housing, some have settled on pavement, route side, river bank and roof of buildings and they do not have a real job. To address this problem, the Municipality of Phnom Penh established Poverty Reduction Task Forces since 1996 with support from UNDP, DFID, UN-Habitat to carry out the Cambodia government policy to improving 100 poor communities a year with Samdech Prime Minister HUN SEN as head.»

Also on that occasion, His Excellency the Governor appealed to local authorities to accelerate cooperation with other partners to improve the living condition of the poor people and provide security and safety for the people residing in Phnom Penh.
