On August 23, 2007, the Municipality of Phnom Penh held a meeting on the dissemination of a new code of criminal procedure, consisting of 612 articles. The meeting was presided over by H.E PA SOCHEAT VONG, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh. The meeting was also attended by police officers, chiefs of districts and senior officials. The criminal procedures which came into effect on August 21, 2007 shall be replaced the former- UNTAC criminal law. Speaking at the meeting, His Excellency the Deputy Governor said, « The law on Criminal in 1993 as well as provisions concerning judicial court, criminal law and criminal procedure implemented in Cambodia during transitional period were not enough for investigation and the process of criminal case, so the government, in cooperation with and from support of the Government of French, drew up the new criminal procedure which made it easy for police officers as well as judges to carry out their job».
