Press Communiqué
The Phnom Penh Municipality has the great honor to inform the public that every year the people throughout the world elect world mayor candidates include mayors from all the continents. On the website www.worldmayor.com/voting/voting2006.html it is said more than 53,000 citizens from around the world nominated 677 mayors for the title: World Mayor 2006. Based on the proportion and qualifications, the Advisory Board and organizers of the contest decided that 50 mayors from Africa, North America, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe were short-listed for the final round. Phnom Penh Governor H.E KEP CHUK TEMA is one of the short-listed candidates and his name comes first on the list of 12 mayors from China, India, Israel, Japan, Palestine, Philippines, Taiwan and Turkey. The order in which we were put on top of the list is attributed to the achievements recorded by Phnom Penh, including the World Leadership Award won by the Municipality of Phnom Penh on May 11, 2006 in London, Britain and the Urban Sustainability Award granted by JEREMY HARRIS, Former Mayor of HONOLULU on May 11, 2006 in MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA– qualifications on which the Advisory Board and contest organizers based their judgment.
It is a great honor and encouragement to Phnom Penh officials and residents in particular and national pride for the Cambodia people in general. This is evidence that under the leadership of the Royal Government of Cambodia with Samdech Prime Minister HUN SEN as head, local authorities at all levels, armed forces and people have worked together to restore and develop Phnom Penh city to be a political, economic, administrative, tourist and diplomatic hub while ensuring stability, security and development.
The Municipality of Phnom Penh hopes that the public will be highly interested in the information posted on the above-mentioned website on the selection of qualified mayors from every continent as the world mayor.
